Autism How To...Apppointments

I have two children on the spectrum, which means that I have double the appointments related to their issues...Let's see, it'll make me feel better to list some of them: Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Develpmental Pediatrician, Neuropsychologist,, Special Needs Dentist, the HAIRCUT (OH NO!), TWo IEPs....and so on and so forth and I cannot read my pretty, hesitant Vera Bradley planner because it's marred by ink. So how to? Have an apppointment bag ready at all times...(Sensory toys, fidgets, juice boxes with straws, books, and maybe a Xanax for you...) Tell the child about the ppointment as soon as you know, give the kid frequent updates on time and length of appointments, and remember...KEEP GOING! So, how do you how to apppointments?

  1. Hi, Kelly!
I am so thrilled about this new resource for us moms and caregivers. Appointments are always as source for anxiety here. We have found that my son, 13-y-o, will sit quietly with dad's ipad playing angry birds or reading to keep him calm and focused on something. It usually work pretty well, but with my creative genius, each time is a new experience. *sigh and grin*

  2. HI Kelly! This is such an awesome thing. our son is 10 and has aspergers and our daughter is 14 and she is on the spectrum. We are always looking for new resources.
As for our appointments, we make sure that we give them as much notice of the appointment. We also pack a bag with stuff in it to do and make sure ipods are charged. We remind as to when it is and the day of we do a "countdown".
